Meet The Founders
Portia Hairston, LCSW
Mrs. Portia Hairston, receiving high accolades from clients and peers, is a woman of action who has attached several titles to her name including Certified Life Coach, Outpatient Therapist, Program Director of Mental Health Building Services, Motivational Speaker and Co-Founder of Sisters Helping Each Other Inc. Born and raised in the small town of Martinsville, Virginia, her focus in life has always been to find different avenues with opportunity to provide services to the community. Her goal has been to assist individuals on a personal level in hopes of boosting the interactions of society within a community as a whole.
After receiving an advanced diploma from Martinsville High School, Mrs. Hairston continued both undergraduate and graduate studies at Virginia Commonwealth University where she received her Bachelor’s in Social Work in 2011 and her Masters in Social Work in 2014. From 2010 until 2011, Mrs. Hairston interned with Kids in Focus while in college; and after obtaining her undergraduate degree in Social Work, she began working with Good Neighbor Counseling Services as an Intensive In-Home Counselor from 2011 to 2014. Always maintaining a busy schedule, Mrs. Hairston worked as Program Director of Day Treatment Services while consecutively interning as a Social Worker for Richmond Public Schools from 2012-2013.
Since 2014, Mrs. Hairston has been working as Program Director of Mental Health Skill Building Services where she also holds the title of Outpatient Therapist. She currently resides in Beaverdam, Virginia with hopes to expand her mental health skills and services on a more personal level to build long lasting rapport with clients in order to help stabilize their daily living activities and decisions. The opportunity to fulfill this goal presented itself when she decided to become a life coach in her area. In the future Ms. Hairston plans to continue expanding Sisters Helping Each Other Inc., she co-founded in Martinsville, Virginia in 2012. Although she may wear many titles, she wears them all effectively and efficiently while upholding a moral standard that goes the extra mile for others.
Dembris Barbour, BSW
Director of Program Operations
Ms. Dembris Barbour, described by colleagues as an upbeat, self-motivated team player with commendable leadership skills, is no stranger to balancing multiple responsibilities. She has attracted various professional roles, such as Crisis Line Specialist, Suicide Intervention Skills Trainer, Sexual Assault Victim Advocate, Program Coordinator, Motivational Speaker, and Co-Founder and Director of Sisters Helping Each Other Inc. A native of Martinsville, Virginia, Dembris is inspired by the need for social justices in the community and recognizes a deficit of services for women especially young girls who could easily succumb to a cycle of broken dreams due to a lack of resources and positive role models. Hope, motivation, inspiration, positivity, and creativity fuel her desire to impact and empower the lives of others.
Dembris values continuing education and received her undergraduate degree in Social Work through Longwood University in 2017. She is currently pursuing her Master of Social Work degree from Radford University. Prior to pursuing her degree she has volunteered at CONTACT crisis center and the United Way of Martinsville and Henry County. She began networking and forming relationships with leading community agents, such as the United Way, Citizens Against Family Violence, Grace Network, Martinsville Middle School, and the Boys and Girls Club of the Blue Ridge, which has helped guide her career path.She became drawn to combat the struggles of depression, unhealthy relationships, suicide ideation, and poverty.
Known for her energetic and inventive presentation style, Dembris currently facilitates and coordinates programs that define healthy and abusive relationships, identify and discuss dating abuse, and teach resiliency skills such as positive communication, anger management, and conflict resolution. Dembris is dedicated to helping others grow their capabilities and connections and getting to the next level of success, no matter where they are in the process. She looks forward to expanding the S.H.E brand and not only creating a local impact, but also a global impact!
